She says there was no power or filtration in any of the tanks, but they were still full of fish.
Other customers in the live pets section of the store told Lohmeyer that the power had been off for more than a week. The water temperature in the tanks was 64 degrees, she said.
The disgusted customer asked to see the store’s manager and was told he was unavailable. She then asked to see the pet department manager, who was ‘on break.’
After waiting more than an hour, Lohmeyer purchased the remaining ‘least sick’ fish to rescue them from the putrid tanks.
Mendham-Chester Patch contacted Walmart’s head office in Arkansas and was told the store had stopped selling live fish ‘months ago.’
Patch responded with pictures taken by Lohmeyer’s daughter Dina of the tanks in their local Walmart.
Walmart representative Kayla Whiting finally responded after receiving the pictures, saying, ‘This is unacceptable.’
'There are protocols in place that were not followed, and associates [in the pet department] will be retrained immediately,' she told Patch.
No Walmart staff members have been punished for the incident.
Pictures 2-6: Walmart is the only major retailer to still support gestation crates for pregnant pigs & their meat suppliers are never dropped even after several of them have been caught abusing animals in undercover investigations (more images here: http://adoptpets.tumblr.com/post/73130349742/tyson-foods-changes-animal-care-policies-at)
Last week, two of the country’s largest pork producers - Smithfield Farms and Tyson Foods - announced plans to remove “gestation crates” from their pork supply chain. Gestation crates are small metal stalls used to confine mother pigs on some factory farms. The crates are so tiny that mother pigs cannot turn around, walk, or even lie down comfortably.
Because pigs are so smart – perhaps even smarter than cats and dogs – when crammed in gestation crates they often go insane from the stress, abuse, and lack of stimulation. Some will bite the bars of their cage until their teeth shatter. Others lie depressed and motionless on the ground all day, their intelligent, social minds broken by the misery of confinement.
Gestation crates are so cruel that they have been banned in nine states and dozens of countries. In addition to Smithfield and Tyson, dozens of major retailers - including Walmart competitors like Costco, Target, Safeway, Kroger, and others - have committed to phasing gestation crates out of their supply chains. Walmart Canada has also committed to ending its use of crates. Walmart U.S. is the last major retailer still clinging to this outdated, barbaric practice.

Picture 7: Walmart treats their employees cruelly too and fires them for trying to help animals
Picture 8-9: A little over a year ago 112 workers killed in Bangladesh Walmart factory fire
A year before the fire, Walmart reportedly decided against aiding factory upgrades that could have stopped fires like last month’s blaze at a Bangladesh garment factory.
Bangladeshi suppliers of Walmart clothes wanted to upgrade their facilities to make them more fire-proof, and other retailers approved the plan, according to Bloomberg. The plan only fell through after Walmart and the Gap said they would not pay higher prices to make such upgrades feasible.
What you can do:
1. Boycott Walmart until they stop supporting animal abuse & urge your family and friends to do so also
2. Sign this petition to help pigs:
